Atergatis
A l’origine des sirènes on trouve une divinité : Atergatis. déesse des Syriens ; on croit que c’est la mère de Sémiramis.
Déesse de la lune, Atergatis était adorée dans l’Asie mineure hellénistico-romaine dans l’actuelle région qui couvre Israel, la Turquie, le Liban, l’Égypte, Rome et la Grèce. Le lieu de culte principal était Bambyke-Hierapolis actuellement Manbij en Syrie. On a aussi trouvé une statue d’Atergatis à Rome avec un serpent enroulé autour d’elle.
Le dieu de la végétation Ichthys était son amant et la légendaire Sémiramis, fondatrice de la ville de Babylone, sa fille.
Atergatis confia l’éducation de sa fille à une colombe, pendant qu’elle se transformait en divinité mère-poisson et démarrait une vie aquatique. En hommage à Atergatis et Semiramis les Syriens évitaient de manger du poisson et des pigeons (colombes). Elle devait donc avoir une nature amphibie, moitié humaine, moitié poisson. Ce fut sans doute ainsi que naquit la première déesse à corps de poisson. Bientôt ses vertus prirent de l’ampleur et les légendes à son sujet se mirent à proliférer. Si bien qu’Atergatis a créé des » doubles » que l’on rencontre dans d’autres mythologies sous d’autres noms.
Atergatis
At the origin of the sirens is a deity: Atergatis, goddess of the Syrians; it is believed to be the mother of Semiramis.
Goddess of the moon, Atergatis was worshipped in Hellenistic-Roman Minor Asia in the current region that covers Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Rome and Greece. The main place of worship was Bambyke-Hierapolis now Manbij in Syria. A statue of Atergatis was also found in Rome with a snake wrapped around it.
The god of vegetation Ichthys was her lover and the legendary Semiramis, founder of the city of Babylon, her daughter.
Atergatis entrusted the education of his daughter to a dove, while she transformed herself into a mother-fish divinity and began an aquatic life. In homage to Atergatis and Semiramis, the Syrians avoided eating fish and pigeons (doves). It must therefore have had an amphibious nature, half human, half fish. This was probably how the first goddess with a fish body was born. Soon its virtues grew and legends about it began to proliferate. So much so that Atergatis has created « doubles » that can be found in other mythologies under different names.
